I heard about using a international SIM card..

I'm pretty sure I know whats going on. You probably bought an international phone with the 1900 band. This is fine, but in the USA, most carriers use the 1900 AND 850 bands for service. Its probable that your phone is only receiving half of the signal your carrier is providing. Unfortunately there is no way around this. Your phone cant recieve 850 signal no matter what you do.
The sticker that the other answerer talks of will be of no use to you, as it only helps to increase reception for bands your phone can actually receive. An international sim card wont help either, because you still wont be able to receive the 850. Its phone hardware dependent and has nothing to do with the sim.

Isn't there something like a sticker with some chip that's supposed to improve reception?

I'm not sure how this works! but in order for me to answer that Question i need to know where you are in the US and what kind of phone it is.
