It's quite common and usually disappears by age one. My son still had his at 2 yrs and we were referred to a specialist. He had an ultrasound on his heart. The cardiologist concluded that it was an "innocent" murmur and would most likely disappear in time. Murmurs can sound more pronounced when the child is sick and they can also be inherited (my brother and I both had one).
Talk to your doctor if you are worried.

My brother had one that was diagnosed before he was even born. Please don't worry!!
My brother's case was pretty severe. He had a hole in his heart and had a ventricle that needed repaired. My mom had to wait two agonizing years for the operation - too little to undergo such surgery. They weren't sure of his prognosis at the time but average was their highest expectancy.
He's your normal rowdy teenager now!! He still has to go every year for a check up (ekg and the works) to make sure everything is holding up. The believe as he ages he will eventually need repairs. They thought the first one would be at 18/19 but that turned out to be incorrect. They are amazed at what he's done and how great he's doing!!
He had the best of care at Cleveland Clinic hospital. I'd recommend them and the Ronald McDonald house if your insurance will give you that option.
Perhaps, your son's murmour is very minor....

There are alot of people that have heart murmurs, I have one. When I get too hot or too cold, I get lightheaded and sometimes faint. I've only fainted once though. It's not too bad of a thing...

Lots of tests and watch for a couch. Learn all you can about it, so you are prepared just in case. My grand daughter was diagnosed with a whole in her heart as well. Try to stay positive and talk to someone so your son doesn't see your fear.

don't stress until you find out where it is at. a lot of people have them and don't even know about it. my daughter was born w/ one and she is fine, she does everything and anything any other kid does. the only thing you really need to worry about is informing his doctors and the pharmacy.the told me not to worry. just to be sure to inform the doc. they should a echo also which is a ultrasound of the heart. try not to stress, he see you stressed and it will make him nervous also. good luck

my husband was diagnosed with it when he was just born.
they told his mom that if he could survive the situation until after infancy, anyway he would die before 18. last week we celebrated his 29th birthday, he is a pharmacist, very succesful in his job, and one of the healthiest people i have ever met!!!!
God bless your cute child, don't worry, he may become one of the greatest people of this world.

i had one as a baby and child. there weren't many complications involved. i would just suggest that you not give your child any type of medications that cause drowsiness or contain alcohol, as it may cause palpitations.

some children are born with cardiac pathology but immediate cardiologist attention can make their life better, and yours too.
