My son will be turning 1 in May...how the time flies!

Of course I am excited to start planning this event even though it is not for a few months. However, the one thing I am worried about is the cake.

Everyone has pictures of themselves or their children as babies covered in frosting and chunks of cake, and I do not want to cut out that tradition. However, since my little one has had only formula and babyfood, all the sugars and "fake" incredients in the cake make me nervous. Most importantly, I don't want him to get sick of off the sudden sugar intake, or anything else like the eggs or regular milk.

Does anyone have any recipes for "baby friendly" cakes? Maybe natural ingredients or better alternatives?

Thank you!!!

Your son will not have one idea that it is his first birthday. Don't overdo it, he won't remember it and too much will cause confusion and fussiness. A simple cupcake for him to mash his fingers in and play with and take a few pictures is sufficient. Save the big cake and party until age 3 or 4.

I had the same fear with my son's first birthday party. Instead, we opted for a decorated cupcake that the baker made along with the regular cake. A full mini cake should only be given to older children. One year is just too young.

In order to make icing you need whole milk and sugar that's what gives it the fluff. I'd suggest going to a local baker you trust. That way you'll know they are careful about handling food. I've gone to the same baker for my wedding cake, shower cake, and now birthday cakes. She's awesome.

Also, let them make a make a mess. Take loads of pics then take the cake away. If you are quick about it, it will only last a matter of 2 or 3 minutes. That way they don't down the whole cupcake!! Just enough for a good laugh.

My experience has been that kids get a lot more ON them than they do IN them. My son wouldn't even touch his first cake.

Unless you know that your son has allergies, the little bit of egg and milk won't hurt him. You can also give him just a small piece of cake instead of letting him dig into the whole thing.

Also, you can do lots of cool things with cake mixes. I used to make cupcakes from spice cake mix and a can of pumpkin. No more ingredients required! You can also dump a can of diet soda in a cake mix and bake it that way.

You might check out diet boards for healthier versions. Overall, though, I wouldn't stress too much. Let him have the cake early in the day so the sugar doesn't mess up his evening sleep. He'll be just fine with a little sugar in his system.

Wow we just have family for the first year, but all the other years we had big birthday parties that needed two cakes. Each year I saved all the cards, wrapping paper, pictures and a list of what the gifts were, in fact I made a birthday book of each year (so now we have 16 birthday books) that also include movies we saw that year, valentines from the school parties and friends and relatives each year Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter cards, and cards and notes from friends along with certificates (that I had laminated) I've saved absolutely everything. As we look back we remember, and think how the cards and movie tickets have changed over the years. My 16 year old and I look at all those birthday books each year and it's a lot of fun!.

In the book What to Expect the First Year there is a recipe for a carrot cake that is more baby friendly. For my daughter's birthday I made individual cupcakes so it was easier to control how much each child was consuming. But remember their first birthday only comes once so let them enjoy the day!
