You need to get a vocal coach for one. And you need to start auditioning for things.....local theater, bands, etc. Get really well known as a singer in your area. If you don't live in an urban area, you will have to move. Go to college in a large city like NY or Chicago. Chicago is good because it's a smaller city to start out in....check out depaul, roosevelt university. The best thing you can do for yourself is get into a really good music program. You're only 17 be patient....it may take another 10 years to be where you want professionally.

Practice everyday. Analyze what you did wrong, work on it, and next time do it better. Keep it up day after day, and after a few years the results will surprise you.

Tell everyone and anyone you know that you sing and would like to be in a band and record. Eventually someone will introduce you to someone and you will have a band and/or people to record with.

Starting a band requires time and patience. If you don't have both, you won't make it. Don't push or boss people around, and don't let yourself get bossed around. Just look and notice. If the band is not meeting and practicing, it's not gonna work. If the band gets frustrated with each other, it's not gonna work. Balance work and play, and get people to be patient.

After your band is situated, play out, find other bands, and play with them. The best way to gain recognition is playing with other bands that people know about. Call your local newspaper or college press, have them do a story on your band.

Hold on to your dreams and follow your heart.

First define "success".

There are thousands of singer an only a few ones get into the top 20. Be realistic and know that top singers are there just for pure luck, besides having talent (some of them). If you define success as being able to do what you love and being able to make a modest living from it, then you are on the right path; fame and glory is just a blind lottery.
