Regarding energy in the space of the universe, I believe you're referring to the theory of vacuum energy. Vacuum energy is a bit more complicated to explain, but roughly translated means that there's energy in a vacuum, without corresponding matter. It's based on the theory that pairs of particles are being constantly generated in the vacuum of space--one particle to one antiparticle. These two particles almost immediately collide, annihilating each other. The energy from that annihilation perfectly counters the energy required for their creation, resulting in zero change.
Stephen Hawking came up with the hypothesis that near the even thorizon of a black hole, it's possible for one particle to be sucked into the black hole before it is annihilated by its twin, resulting in the second particle surviving and becoming "real". This surviving particle just sort of wanders off into deep space, thereby slightly reducing the mass of the black hole.
Another physicist, I believe his name was Edward Tryon, suggested that perhaps vacuum energy is a way of counterbalancing the kinetic energy of the universe's gravity. Since gravity appears to be an energy-generating device, and it's impossible to outright create anything without an appropriate counterbalance, on the surface this would seem to satisfy the mystery.
