There are so many choices for labor and delivery, it is a little overwhelming. I would like to hear your opinions as to which position is best for delivering-squating, sitting, laying on your back, etc and why. I am also wondering which position is best for less risk of a tear or need for an episiotomy. Just let me know your experiences and what worked best for you. Thanks!

The best thing to do is give birth in a setting where you are in charge. The other people are there to assist you, not control you. That way, you will be free to change position and find what works best for you at the time. You won't know until you are down into it.
To avoid tearing or cutting, have someone lubricating the area with a fresh bottle of oil as soon as stretching begins and gently stretching the oiled skin around the baby's head as it emerges.

Make sure you and the person delivering the baby are on the same page before you go into labor and that you can trust them to respect your wishes and directions.

It is my understanding that usually tears heal better than cuts.
Also, that for someone experiencing back labor, on hands and knees is helpful.

With my first child I was in complete control had a birth plan and delivered (without pain medication) in a squat position(that felt natural), I choose not to have an episiotomy (23 stitches inside and out) but the experience was beautiful and I would not change a thing!!!!! My second pregnancy was very high risk and had no choose but to do the traditional (on my back, etc) delivery. I preferred the first. Good luck!!!!

My first honestly was the BEST delivery i had! I was able to try out a birthing chair! THAT was awsome. hehe Your sat up so you gravity helping and that was great. The other 2 i had just laying down and they were just a little harder.. not much since i've had smaller babies. But i had an awsome experience with the chair. Soo wish the other places i gave birth had em but the never did :( I didnt need a episotomy with the first.. But 2nd and 3rd i did. Did all 3 epidural free! ppl will say get it.. some say dont. Its all up to you tho. Me.. as painful as birth is.. it's ment to be that way and after all said and done the pain is worth it. I just didnt see the need to get an Epidural.. plus i didnt like the idea of someone sticking something in my spinal area lol!

I really, really think the epidural helps. When you are in wicked pain it is hard to focus on the pushing and you just want to get the baby out....pushing too hard/too soon/wrong time will cause you to tear. I had the epidural and when the pain was gone, I could listen to the nurses and pay attention to how I needed to push.....the drugs they gave me before I took the epidural just made me druggy and out of it and did not stop the pain.......I would skip the drugs next time and go right for the epidural....it helped me calm down and I could watch my pushing in the mirror....I could slow down and the Dr. did perineal massage so I only tore a tiny bit (1 stitch)...ask your Dr. if he/she does this....and did NOT need an episiotomy (which tends to be a deep cut). I delivered on my back which might not be the best, but w/ the epidural it was fine............I sat straight up in the bed until it was time to push...that seemed to help the back pains.

What ever position they can give me the most pain relief in.

With each child, each presentation, it is different. It all depends on what the baby needs.

some women just tear and some dont. I tore all three times.. Bad too.

Not one delivery was the same. I think that sometimes out of fear we look into birthing too much and we just need to let nature take its course. When you are giving birth, you will know what feels best to you then.......

GOOD LUCK>>> GET AN EPIDURAL (had with and without....never without again)

You need to be able to try all the positions and see what would make you the most comfortable, I have had 3 baabies and no 2 births were the same. One of my better ones was in a whirlpool tub, I can't say exactly why but it seemed to be a lot easier and I had less pain issues. I had all 3 of mine without any drugs though and I have heard that drugs are the way to go to make it easier on yourself. Good luck

however you are most comfortable but remember if you are lying on your back the baby has to move up throuh the neck of your womb and vagina. if you are on your hands and knees or squatting then gravity will help you out.
