My brother-in-law cannot keep a job. He gets fired or he quits over stupid reasons. Thursday of last week he talked to my husband about coming to stay with us. My husband told him okay, but he would not be allowed to bring his 2 cats. We live in an apartment, and the only way to have a pet here is to pay a pet deposit and an extra 50.00 per month. Thursday night I was not home and my husband was at work. My brother-in-law went to my husbands work to get the key to our apartment so he could move his stuff in. I came home and he had the cats in here!! I told him he knew the rules, but the cats could stay until friday morning when he could find them somewhere to stay. He is still here and has not gotten the cats out, and my husband keeps saying he will talk to him, but he doesn't. My husband says that my brother-in-law says that if we kick the cats out, then we are kicking him out. So, my husband is affraid that if he says something he'll lose his brother. What do we do?

My brother kicked me out when he realized I was mooching off of him (I was young, having problems and didn't know how to resolve them;) it didn't hurt our relationship in the long run. He had every right to do what he did.
The rules you quoted him are not yours, they are that of the apartment complex you're living in. Get rid of him now.

Talk to your husband again. You all can get evicted for breaking the lease rules. You don't need to kick his brother out but it should be move the cats or pay up for the deposit and the rent increase immediately.

If all else fails tell him your neighbor stopped you to ask about the cats in your window.

Your b-in-law has no respect for your husband or you. I think he's got a lot of nerve moving in with his cats. Just him alone puts your husband & you in an awkward position. Tell your husband if he won't talk to his brother tonight, you will. Believe me, if you end up kicking your b-in-law out, it won't be the end of the world for him. He's a real loser & is taking advantage of your kindness. Family does that a lot, unfortunately. Stand firm & good luck!!!

It is your house too, if your husband doesn't want to deal with it then you deal with it. remind your husband of the extra fees to have the cat. I would make this proposition to your brother in law, he can keep the cats if HE pays the deposit and extra 50 dollars a month imediately or you are going to take the cats to the nearest shelter.

Your house, your rules. If your husband loses a brother over something that small, he isn't much of a brother. Your husband needs to face that.
