The Rainy Day
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the moldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

It's about a person going through hard times. Notice how similar the first two paragraphs are. His relating his life to a stormy day.

But in the last paragraph he shows that he's still hopeful.

As the other answers have suggested, this poem is meant to be inspirational, and give hope. Even though it feels dark and dreary today, the sun will return.
The line "Into each life some rain must fall" is the most quoted, of course. Longfellow often wrote on themes of universality -- everyone goes through these things, in other words. The parallelism of the first two stanzas is common in Longfellow's poems. I think that the imagery is very well done. You can picture the rainy day clearly.
Another of Longfellow's best known works (and one of my favorites) is "Paul Revere's Ride," also known as "The Landlord's Tale."

The cold and rain, the leaves falling, symbolize middle age. This is made explicit in the second verse, when he says, "the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast." The year is nearing its end. His life is nearing its end.
He takes comfort that the sun still shines, with promise of another year after this year ends. The seasonal imagery suggests the cycle of birth and death; one person dies, but life goes on in others.
There may also be a suggestion of immortality of the soul.
