Sadly we do still battle with racial discrimination, and now discrimination toward people of hispanic descent seems to be on the rise as well as discrimination toward people from the middle east. Some ways to minimize discrimination are to tend to the points that follow. (I'm not saying they're right or wrong- just that they do influence income.)

Education. People with higher levels of education on average make more money. Sometimes even a degree in an unrelated field will put you above someone with no degree.

Experience. People who hire you want to know you have experience in the specific culture you'll be working in, and doing the particular tasks you'll be required to do.

Where you live. In some parts of the country wages are higher than in other parts. Of course, living expenses vary, too.

What part of town you live in matters, too- people tend to make roughly what their neighbors make.

How you look. Sorry to say, but appearance does matter in most jobs. Not always whether you are pretty or handsome, but definitely how neatly you dress, and how appropriately you dress for the job you do.

Language skills. Poor ability to use the language correctly will be a detriment to higher wages unless you are lucky enough to be a sports star.

Men still make more money than women.

Older workers are routinely discriminated against in some fields. A very experienced 50 year old may be laid off first or hired last because it costs more to keep them on staff- you can hire someone fresh out of college much cheaper- of course you lose the value of the experience, too. Also, this is just my opinion, but it seems that when a younger boss is hiring they don't hire older workers because they find them intimidating.
