Marc F is right, especially if you're planning on living in maine's major urban area of portland. you can still get a decent one bedroom for $700+, but you might not be in the best area of the city (although i'm sure it's much nicer than whatever area of houston you're in). maine is expensive, and the weather is rather dreadful for a large portion of the year. colorado, however, is also quite expensive. there are plenty of other nice areas of the nation you could move to that are cheaper and have nice neighborhoods. areas all around the southern us, like parts of florida, parts of north carolina, parts of georgia, have warm weather and are much less expensive than maine or colorado.

in response to phantom's response above....maine is a southern state with southern accents? what a bizarre comment considering it's as far north as you can get on the east coast!

You can afford to live in a better neighborhood. Check out the Houston apartment guide.

Houston became as you say because we took in nearly 200,000 Katrina evacuees from New Orleans. New Orleans had a population of 450,000, so do the math. Crime was a nightmare there, and it came here.

You say you can't afford to live in a more affluent neighborhood, yet want to move to a state with a much higher cost of living? Hell, try Dallas if you want more than two seasons (they have three... the third is "not as hot as summer" and comes in October).

As I said, check out the apartment guide and see what's there. Look on http://www.har.com and see if there are houses for rent in a better zip code. Don't just give up. That's just silly.

New Orleans decided to share its crime rate with Texas. I mean after all, one city shouldnt keep all of the crime. They've started to go back though--the murder rate in New Orleans right now is the highest its ever been (despite the much smaller population).

I can't believe that having a hurricane destroying your home and all your crack houses can't make you go straight. Only in New Orleans man. It's actually like they got MORE violent! it's pathetic. Sorry they all came to Texas, but thats part of living next to a cess pool. Eventually it overflows.

As for the other places you mentioned, Colorado is absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful. Like you said weather, scenery. Maine...well thats significantly colder than Texas. Are you prepared for that much snow? Maine is a southern state though, so you'll have the same hospitality and southern accents. Maine has beautiful summers and definitely has a lower cost of living (except for Bar Harbor). Summer is much shorter in CO and ME though.

Though why aren't you considering staying on the Gulf Coast with the same kind of climate? Alabama or Florida? You could move farther up and have 4 seasons but still have the really long summer. Cost of living is much cheaper in Alabama than it is in Colorado.

I live in Maine, and i'm not sure where others are getting there information, but it is VERY expensive to live here. We have the highest tax burden in the nation. When I moved here from Cincinnati, I had to spend a lot more on housing. For example, we have a 1900 sq ft, 3 bedroom house on 1/2 acre. We had to spend 345k, and we pay about 6k a year in taxes. We live just north of Portland. Plus the winter is VERY cold. As I type, it is 10 below zero. Frigid. True, it is beautiful, but the cost of living kills it.
