The missing link is not a term that relates to physics. It originated in biology. A term that you might be trying to describe is the cosmological constant. Einstein once called it his greatest mistake. He originally introduced the concept to provide a way for the Universe to be stable. At the time he published the theory of General Relativity the expansion of the universe had not been detected. In later years it was determined that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating and the Cosmological Constant is needed to explain what is happening.
