What do film makers use in films when a scene is shot where an actor snorts cocaine? I was watching a film and thought they can't be using the real stuff, or can they? Are there any side affects from snorting this prop substance? I was wondering if they used glass, at least that would get rid of a few annoying celebrities!

When you open a piece of gum sometimes there is white powder covering the gum to keep the gum from melting and sticking to the wrapper .
It is called gum base powder you can buy it by the can,
It is odorless and harmless Uma snorted it in Pulp Fiction.
Whenever they show "snorting" in movies it is usually Implied
they show the guy grab a straw or Tony grabs a hand full and snorts..
Truth be told you rarely see stuff disappear up a nostril
but when you do it is Gum base powder.

Good question! I don't think they use glass, that would wreak havoc on a person's sinuses. I would probably guess flour. It wouldn't be caustic and would not have any negative physical effects. But only they know what they use for sure. What I do know, is that it wouldn't be the real thing, they'd get busted. Someone on the set would squeal to the cops or sell the story to the enquirer.

powdered baby milk and/or powdered sugar.

Since cocain is "cut" with either of these in real life... the product looks the same.

They probably use some inert non-nutritive substance like Inositol.
