Red 76 is correct...it's a song about drug addiction.
Monkey is a reference to heroin addicition..."Too much at stake, ground beneath me shake,"..etc.
I believe 'shocking the monkey' specifically refers to trying to break the habit, and the monkey doesn't like that.
Great song.

I'd like to find out too. This is sometimes mistaken as a song about shock therapy, but Gabriel has said it is a song about jealousy.

I don't think the song is about anything. It was an avenue for him to make his videos. Back in the day, his videos were revolutionary, and that was just a song that caterered to the video, which was way better than the song.
