Any management training seminar you attend is likely to include an exercise designed to demonstrate the greater effectiveness of group decision making. It is clear that, normally, it results in more favorable solutions.

However, I can see the drawbacks. The more people involved in the decision, the longer it takes. And there is no guaranty that it will result in a better decision. You may suffer a classic case of "groupthink," or a charismatic individual may drown out the voice of a more knowledgeable one. Yahoo Answers is a great example. I'm a senior financial planner. It's a simple fact that the number of folks in this forum who know more about managing money than me is going to be incredibly small (almost no one); yet, lots of people have no problem tossing out completely unqualified opinion as if it were fact, then they "thumbs down" my answers. Of course, I simply accept it as the nature of the beast, but it does concern me that people who have a gift for sounding convincing can cause incredible damage. I'm not suggesting that it's intentional; they're intentions are good, but they just don't know what they're talking about.
