I dont recommend learning obsolete software, as it is not likely to be of value. Windows 2000 is 7 years old, and most software is upgraded every 3 years..you know, Windows95, 98, 2000, 2003 etc. Microsoft likes it that way so they can sell you more stuff. Open source software, on the other hand often lasts 5 to 7 years, and Unix has been around for over 20 years!
If your friend really wants to learn some software that he can tweak things, or even possibly write software that could someday be included in the operating system, then he should learn Linux. One real easy Linux, is kubuntu, at www.kubuntu.org.

How about half-price-books. I bought my window 2000 server book there for about $10.00. It even came with the CD.
