I have a laptop which I want to install windows XP on; the laptop doesn't have a CD-rom, though. I do, however, have an USB hard drive, and a program which allows me to access a windows-like environment that is stored on the external HDD.

So, if I were to copy my XP cd into a folder on my external, what directory and what file would I have to to into and run to get the windows XP setup started.

It can indeed be done! I think, I'm in the process of trying to do it myself, but some of the posters in the following thread at the CD forum report they've had success. Feel free to mail me if you have any problems. (I'll try to write something more here when I have a better idea of the process.)

Anyway, here's the address: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16713

Be sure to read all of the thread before doing anything, and the links to the threads on the MSFN forums are worth reading too.

Sorry hun i don't know. Sounds like this would be easier if you acquired an external cd-rw or cd-rom drive. Or instead put the contents of the windows xp cd on a thumb drive and changed your bios so that your system would boot from it.
