Our computer has broken and we've been told to get a new one. I had loads of photos and videos on the hard drive that I would really like to get back. I know it's my own fault for not saving them externally! Any ideas? I don't want to spend a fortune.

Its very easy. Open the old computer and remove the hard drive. Physically install the old hard drive in the new computer (essentially, plug it to the power supply and the data ribbon/calbe). If your new computer has a hard drive with only a "single ended" cable, you can simply unplug the CD drive and plug old drive in. After you have copied the files to the new hard drive, you can unplug the old one and plug your CD back in.

Check the master slave on the old drive and set it according to the setup. Boot up your computer and for the most part, you My computer should have the drive visible.

Hope this helps

Take the old hard-drive out of the machine and buy and external Hard-Drive case - these are fairly inexpensive from PC World etc - then you will be able to use the hard-drive as an external hard-drive in the future.

It depends on what broke on your computer. If the hard drive did not break then you can put it in the new computer to get stuff off of it. If the hard drive just got corrupted you can possibly download either Hiren's boot disk or a Live Linux CD (such as Knoppix) and get stuff off of it that way...
