" Israel was viewed negatively by 56 per cent of respondents and positively by 17 per cent; for Iran, the figures were 54 per cent and 18 per cent. The United States had the third-highest negative ranking, with 51 per cent citing it as a bad influence and 30 per cent as a good one. Next was North Korea, which was viewed negatively by 48 per cent and positively by 19 per cent.
Canada had the most positive rating in the survey of 28,389 people in 27 countries, with 54 per cent viewing it positively and 14 per cent negatively. It was followed by Japan and France.
Respondents were also asked their views of the 25-member European Union; 53 per cent saw it as positive and 19 per cent as negative."

To touch on the answer to your question with regard to Israel, the world hates a loser, and they perceive Israel as having lost the recent war with Lebanon.
The lesson to be drawn from this is to eliminate the Islamic terrorists without pulling any punches.
If Israel were perceived as a winner today, then nobody would overlook the fact that the "presidents" of the Palestinian Authority have ripped off the poor starving Palestinians. Yasser Arafat ("Abu Amar") stole BILLIONS of dollars, while Mahmoud Abbas ("Abu Mazen") has only just now availed himself of the opportunity to steal 100 million dollars from his downtrodden subjects.
If anyone is oppressing the Arabs, it's their own leaders. Can you deny this?

I have no clue what your talking about.. when I travel.. I am greeted with open arms except in a few nations like france....
I did read that a few that sit on the UN had a bad view of the US... but then again... they are in the UN.... what do you expect.. they dont do anything really... except ask to be able to tax the American people...
I was in africa a few weeks back and had people walk up to talk to me about how wonderful the US was... are the streets really golden can you really make money and keep it.. I said sorta of.. but it changes all the time... we keep less and less of the money we make.
when I was in asia. no one ever said anything to me about having a bad feeling toward the US.. I have a jacket that has an American Flag and the Marine corp banner on it.... I have gotten the question.... ( you are a Marine ) and a smile... nothing else...
so I would go back and really see who, what is saying we have a bad view around the world,..... I would bet it would be people from say... the UN.. and france... which always treats people like crap... personally I cant think of a more hate filled nation than paris france... they dont like anyone... and I dont know why...
heck even the embassador from iraq under saddam said the US was the freindly nation he has ever been in

It is difficult to answer your question in capsule form, but I will try.
I'm not one of those people who screams "anti-semitist" at the mere whiff of opposition to Israeli policies, but I know my history, and I know that throughout it, populations only wanted Jews among them when it served their purposes and to a large extent still do. They deemed them disposable when considered no longer as useful as before, and they disposed of them without conscience.
Now, Jews have their own country and a source of power from it. People don't like that in itself. Israel has committed some acts which even the most pro-Israel foreigners, as well as Israelis themselves, have condemned vigorously. And Israel can and should, I think, should make more land concessions to the Palestinians and even compensate them for buildings they have destroyed in order to house Jewish settlers. But make no mistake: Israel is not hated so much because of its policies or how it came to be as it is because it is a Jewish state. If we hate Israel because of its past policies, then why are we not still critical of Spain for its atrocities at home and abroad in the 15th to 19th centuries? Why are we not pilloring Japan for its more recent atrocities all over the Pacific? Why aren't we still up in arms about the way the British treated Africans, Indians, Acadians and Australian aboriginal people? Or what the Turks did to the Greeks, Armenians and Kurds? Why don't we talk as much about what goes on in Tibet, Burma, Sri Lanka, Mexico, the Sudan and everywhere else where ethnic populations are discriminated against, under draconian government control or slaughtered in their sleep? I'm not saying "give Israel a pass", just give her equal and fair treatment.
On the subject of Iran - Iran has presented a challenge that the West simply doesn't like. It's the same challenge that North Korea presented. That is, the old members of the nuclear "club" don't want to admit any new members, and countries which do try to construct nuclear weapons are treated like pariahs. I can't help but wonder how this would have played out if the relative moderate and reformist Khatani was still in power? Iran's society is so closed and regulated we fear it in a way, just like we feared the Japanese but not the Germans, because we knew so little about them. Especially because the current President is so aggressive and confrontational (not to mention downright hateful), we think they're all loose cannons, a potential ticking time bomb which could blow at any time. The only solution is change from within, at least another moderate presidency. Then we can talk. I think a positive step which we can take in the meantime to ease the deadlock is to entice all countries with nuclear weapons sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty and have it properly and independently monitored.
The United States is the toughest nut of all. The problem with the US is a matter of great expectation; of others placing the bar higher in all areas because of the really good things the US has done and has stood for since its independence. It has done some bad things (but, as I have said in the case of Israel "who hasn't?"); it is flawed, it is feared, yes, it is arrogant with its power and wealth, but do we hate France because of its wealth, power and arrogance? Anybody who lives in the EU can tell you that France, for some reason, pulls most of the strings. It vetoed the UK's entry into the EU twice, it's always the last holdout for potential new entrants, it insists on defying free trade and making the world a poorer place by not budging on the CAP and it imposes its will on every issue from immigration to working hours and benefits and snaps like a yard dog every time anybody disagrees, and is drunk with its own self-importance. But France does not appear on the "most hated" list. I don't hate France, but I don't compare it favorably to the United States when it is so obvious that everything that France does is it its own interest alone, whereas at least in the US, while it looks after its interests, it also looks after the interests of others.
I guess you're always going to be a target when you're on top.
