I think cell phones are important for everyone, but especially for girls. For safety reasons, you need to have a way to call for help, just in case.

Beyond that, cell phones are great for just keeping in touch. In our society, we take them for granted, so if some doesn't have a cell phone, or if they keep their phone off, it is very frustrating for others. We are a society that wants what we want when we want it. We are also very information-based, and cell phones help with both of these societal expectations.

As far as the disadvantages... many people do not understand their complicated legal contracts with the cell phone carriers, and they go way over their minutes or other usage limits. They run up huge bills and don't understand why. Also, people sometimes get "tricked" into excessively long contracts with cell phone providers.

Another disadvantage is the lack of social etiquette. A lot of people, especially younger people, are rude to others in terms of the places and the times that they use their cell phones. Volume can also be an annoying and disruptive outcome from improper cell phone use.
