from what I have read, I can't seem to find the reference, the pyramids were already built before the Egyptians got there and they used them as tombs. The great pyramid and the sphinx show signs of water damage some people speculate they were built before the great flood mentioned in the Bible.

The Egyptians put guards at the tombs and they also put curses on thieves who entered the tomb without permission. In order for the ruler to make it to the afterlife, they needed to be buried using certain rituals and they needed to be buried with all the things that they would need in the afterlife. The movie you saw may have overdramatized the situation by having the thieves rob a fresh tomb. The tombs were more likely robbed many years after the burial when the tomb was "forgotten" or neglected by the current pharoah.

The robberies weren't always public knowledge. What would the pharoah and the high priests know about the going-ons on the West Bank of Luxor in the desolute tomb areas? Had the Egyptians treated Tombs like Shrines requiring visitations then there probably would have been less brazen thievery.

Very few tombs were robbed in that era. The tombs were well hidden and most of the people involved it building them were killed. And if anyone saw you diggin in the sand someplace you were probably killed. The tombs were robbed centuries later.

The Egyptians stuck to the traditions of their people and respected the dead kings and queens around them as they were taught to do years before they were robbed. As many people know, the Egyptians also protected their dead and I think that the dead were more important to them than the jewels. Many people also know that the people who stole from the Eygptians were cursed a little while after the theft occured.

They continued to do this, dispite robbery, out of respect for the dead and to their rulers and gods. Their tradition of constructing tombs to honor the afterlife was a long and sacred one. They feared the gods far more than they did the mortals who came to steal. They also believed that the gods would attend to the theives in their way.
