I would hope to see them in a safari park or zoo within driving distance of London

I think you mean Barbary Lions and I believe there are some at Port Lympne Zoo, near Hythe in Kent.

There is a pride of Barbary lions at Longleat Safari Park near Warminster. A good day out!
