They all have their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, the guns don't take into account your attack power, but they don't take into account the enemies' defense rate, either. So you can do damage, even if they have high defense. Whereas if you use a dagger or a ninja sword, you can get in multiple hits, even though they might not be that big. And with axes sometimes you can get a HUGE hit, and other times you can do less than a quarter of the usual damage.

Just try and keep the weapons balanced over your party, so you won't only wind up with heavy hitters and no ranged attackers for flying enemies. You might want to give each character two weapons that they switch between.

I use 1h weapons usually swords on my tanks like Vaan and Basch and bows on my magic wielders like Fran and Penelo. I also keep reserve bows just in case my tanks need to go long range. Weapons with on hit status effects are preferred even though they are not quite as strong. Try everything and see which is best for your play style.

the spear has the strongest weapon in the game, that if you dont touch some of the treasures in the game...
if you prefer offense than defense, use greatswords or spears (2H)
using 1H weapons could give much more evasions than 2H weapons,
