Having spent 7 years in the Royal Navy it gave me a lot.
It taught me about responsibility, how to format and implement decisions and actions and to know myself. How I would react under fire. How to work under stress, what my strong and weaknesses were. I also got to see 3/4 of the World.
I would say that if any school leaver doesn't have the necessary qualifications to go to college or University. Hasn't got a decent job, they should consider joining one of the armed forces. Although, I would keep away from the Army or Marines, as they are under fire in Afghanistan and Iraq at the moment. The Navy is the best, I think, as you get to see the World, don't get me wrong, you still have to put up with some Red tape bullshit, but the experiences you learn can do you well one you rejoin the civilian environment.
National Service did work because of the discipline incurred onto those who were drafted.
Unfortunately, because the Government have cut back on the size of our armed forces. They wouldn't implement this idea.
An idea would be to have those who do not work spend there time helping in the community. To make living in this country a better place. With such a force, you could build cheap houses for the homeless, train them to do car mechanics for example.
You can see, by the fact that jobs are being taken by people from third world countries, because people born in this country look at those jobs as beneath them and would rather stay at home, playing on their game stations.

In theory it is a good idea, as there are far too many little funkers around nowadays!
However, it is unlikely to ever happen. A better idea may be to review school leavers after 12 months – those that have settled into college or a job should be left to develop in their chosen roles, whilst those that are bumming about blowing up cars etc, etc should then face conscription to the Armed Forces and there should also be a type of suspended sentence over the ones that go to work/college so that if they step out of line, then they too will be packed off to boot camp.

I always thought it would be a wonderful idea to get all young males to have some kind of national service, but that was before I had a son. I dont like the idea of him joining up, one hears dreadful stories about bullying. No, he's not a mothers boy, or gay, before you ask. Hes 10 and after all, I am his mum!

I think everyone at some point should serve. It's a Great way to build character, and help you derive a path in life. As ex military, I can tell you Nations dont go to war to give their troops something to do. You are trained in a usefull peacetime job, and you do that job day to day until called upon to serve.

Personally think it would help the growing process if younguns
in that age group were to learn a little discipline and make a
contribution to their country (same for us Yanks). If not military,
something like the "Peace Corps" or whatever with a "boot camp"
training involved.

i think that national service should be mandatory for all 16-18 year olds for 2 years, on the condition that they are not called up for active service until they are over 18.

It seems to work on The Continent. I have no doubt that it would work here. Unfortunately, there are too many people in the UK who would immediately start spouting "human rights" crap, and suing everybody that they can think of. I'd like to see it happen though.
