We don't use a city water system, we have a well for our water supply and this has just started happening in the past week or so. The water is "chuffing" although it's not coming out in spurts, it's still a steady stream. It just sounds like there is air in the pipes. Should I be worried?

Check the pressure tank on the water line. The tank should say on it how much pressure it needs. Possibly the bladder has gone bad . This will make your pump run every time you turn on the water and eventually burn up the pump. It will cause strange noises in your pipes also.

Has it ever gone dry? If so you got air in the line. Your going to need to shut off the pump, and let the lines drain out, then start all over again. May have to raise pump up out of water.
