I grew up listening to r&b and rap(I live in Africa) and i don't really care for genres but recently, i made friends with others who think rock music is the only music worth listening to and i'm not against rock music but all this talk about punk being fake and pop-like now and classic rock being the best is kinda confusing. How can i just listen to what i like without genre discrimination? I look out for vocals mostly. I like Evanescence and Rihanna best.

Well, unfortunately, punk has become the new pop just as grunge rock did in the 90s. Classic rock is not something I like listening to except for a few like The Eagles and such. Punk has become way to mainstream from what it is supposed to be. It's supposed to be anti-establishment. Against what pop actually stands for. It's supposed to have a harder edge than what is coming out now, more raw, I guess you'd say. Hopefully people will get tired of it and it can go back underground and become the hard-edged, ***-kicking lyrical style that it was truly meant to be. If you want to know what punk rock is really supposed to be, try NOFX. What most people think punk rock is is actually emo, sort of punk rock's sad, whiny little brother. Also there is no such thing as just "rock" music anymore, because there are so many genres out there that are encompassed when in the "rock" definition is used that it has lost all meaning of what it used to be. But when it comes down to it, hust listen to what sounds good to you. I hate rap but Jay-z has a nice flow and Fort Minor (Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park side project) really is quite awesome. But I will always go back to Punk and Ska, my first true loves, but everything else takes a back seat to Evanescence, and it's not just because I am in love with Amy Lee. Amy Lee

Everything known to Man can be categorised (into genres). Genres help people sort things out - like when you go browsing at a record shop etc.

Africa, the cradle of civilisation - gave us the blue print for all modern Western music! Africans gave us the blues!

Is punk fake today? Not entirely. Avril borrows a lot from punk rock - but her music is mostly pop.

Greenday's music is much truer to the spirit of original punk.

Classic rock is a broad 'oldies' genre - think Queen and Journey etc. Fans of classic rock like its mature song writing and outstanding musicianship and production etc.

Evanescence is nice - and hard to categorise.

You can't erase discrimination - so here's my advice…

Since you mentioned you like 'Black' music, why not check out some African 'pop', such as...Angelique Kidjo and Youssou N'Dour (a phenomenal voice)? You can also impress your 'rock' friends by checking out these Black rockers: Jimmi Hendrix (of course!); Lenny Kravitz; Living Colour. Or you could try the blues (Robert Johnson; Muddy Waters etc.).

Not all music fits into the genres. I question why certain bands or singers are labelled as "rock" or "country", etc., because to me, they are not, but I guess the industry likes to categorize everyone. I suppose it does help when looking for a band/singer/music online or in a music store. I listen to a broad spectrum of music, and I generally do not categorize it. Just listen to what you like. I can listen to music and categorize it - I would know if it is punk, r&b, etc. but I don't really care. I either like it or I don't. To me, classic rock are songs that never grow old, from the 70s/80s.

i don't even evaluate "classic Rock" a good form..this is basically a seize-prepared on song it extremely is Rock from 20 or so years in the past. this is why you have got Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Floyd and Fleetwood Mac all on an analogous station with the Mamas and the Papas and coastline Boys and Beatles. the different bands you stated in simple terms are not as nicely primary, even among lots of the "classic rock" crowd, and so get missed. yet I see Genesis, Steely Dan and others get stated, in simple terms alot extra not often. think of of it this way, whilst people communicate approximately Alt Rock bands of the 90s, you commonly hear Alice in Chains, Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc.. yet think of of the thousands of lesser primary bands that often get missed. in fact an analogous element with classic Rock. additionally undergo in suggestions that for lots of people who lived int he era, except a band have been given a important great time ruin, minus the internet, Rockers in California a million/2 the time had no thought what Rockers in Texas, or Detroit have been shifting into. i think of this is hard for cutting-facet listeners to be attentive to how diverse the international replaced into pre-internet. MQ2- not somewhat yet. this is style of like what makes a classic automobile. 10 year previous ferraris and porsches will sometime be classics, yet they don't look to be interior an analogous boat as a `1967 GTO, a Porsche 356, Ferrari Dino. Mercedes Gullwing, etc. same element with 90s rock.. evaluate dissimilar it to be "destiny classics" MQ3- 25 + years IMO. i don't evaluate Nevermind and the Black album "classic" as yet. BQ- purchase. Beck is a lot puffed up.

Just open your taste, as you may do with food. Try what you want, don't narrow your mind. Like when you walk: you catch everything with your eyes....in music with your ears, and you'll keep what you like.
