Best to take it to the Sony service center, and not fiddle with the lens yourself.

It seems the drivers that make the cdrw run are messed up. The best option for you would be to reload the windows again. Run the windows cd which came with your laptop. Choose the option updated then it will not clean up the harddisk but installs windows without disturbing your current folders and data. Still it is better to transfer all your important documents etc., to external drive like Disk. It takes around 35 minutes but it worth doing it. You notice after this your laptop got a new life. If you take your laptop to a techinician he will do the same and charge a lot of money. Here in US it is like $100. Good Luck.

Have you installed any new software on your laptop?
I'm assuming that your using a WinXP.
Also check the system properties and see if it gives you an exclamation mark on your cdrw. An exclamation mark indicates some hardware problem or conflicts. If we come to know this then we can narrow down our troubleshooting steps.
The process to check your system properties are :-
1) On your desktop, Right click on "My Computer" which will open "System Properties" window.
2) Click the tab named "Hardware"
3) Click the button named "Device Manager" which will open the "Device Manager" window.
4) Check and see if there are any "Yellow Exclamation" mark.
Just check for an exclamation mark!! That's it. We do not need to change or do with any of the settings on this Device Manager Window.

Ouch. Cleaning the lense is usually dangerous and generally not advised. Never mind. Did it ever work? What sort of CD-RW device is it?

it's not easy to answer for your question as you have already told that you have cleaned the lens, So I can't say anything without watching it just by y eyes, but It will be better for you to go to the Sony's service station and let them know the problem, they will better guide you what to do with it.
Go here and then select your city and state.
