the reasons for doing it are more or less the same as yours
on a personal level I gain a lot of knowledge out of it
it also helps to keep myself occupied
unlike chat sites the time spent on this has its returns in the form of gaining and sharing knowledge
I hope to achieve a useful means of spending time
I desire to keep myself on par with the brains of the world

1. It's a harmless, sometimes interesting, sometimes informative, sometimes amusing form of entertainment. There are obviously some immature, hateful, unintelligent and/or inarticulate people in the mix, but hey, that's just a reflection of life in general. I just ignore these types.
2. On a personal level, I get to express my opinions and have the satisfaction of sharing whatever knowledge or information I may have on various subjects. Some of the more provocative and intelligent questions force me to think and compose logical answers. However, I realize that this is all impersonal, random communication, and that real fulfillment comes from communicating on a more personal level with people, preferably face-to-face.
3. I hope to achieve some clarity of thought, both for myself & others. The total points & "levels" mean nothing to me.
4. The goal is simply to inform & be informed. And hopefully to persuade others to my point of view on issues I really care about.

I enjoy reading the questions and answers and I am very happy that there are intelligent people out there who can share their opinions with us.
By the same token, I am rather upset that there are so many complete idiots who have no idea what they are talking about when they answer some of the simple questions asked!
In this day and age there should be no good reason or excuse why people - especially young Americans should be so ignorant as a great many display in their answers!

I have to agree with most of the answers already given...I like to share my opinion, I enjoy reading others' answers, and I too have too much time on my hands. Some questions get my goat and I end up typing forever, but some questions really challenge my thinking line, and I like to be intellectually challenged. Plus, sometimes, the Q's make me giggle, and who couldn't use a good giggle every now and then?

Reasons are the same as given by you. It is a unique forum where you can share your views with people of other nations. We feel these people very near to us. Unfortunately there are some people who not only waste their times but also harm the forum. One become addicted to it. There is a need for more intelligent questions and quality of answers to be improved by proper research.
