When searching songs on myspace, you have the option of Genre, there is an option of Emo what is this?

'Emo' is sort of a label. It refers to people who are 'emotional' i.e. the 'real' emo's who slit their wrists and write poems about guns etc.
People who class themselves as Emo's usually don't do this sort of stuff, they just wear black skinny jeans, studded belts and lots of heavy black eye make up.
Emo music is the sort of music that these people listen to. They often like punk, metal and other variations of rock. It's mostly pop punk like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday.
Well. There you go. An explanation of the word Emo.

I thought it meant a fluffy, red toy animal from the Sesame Street programme, as in 'Tickle Me Emo' ?

It started off meaning emotional hardcore. Was a spin off from good ole punk rock. Unfortunately emo is a bunch of crap.

EMO is for emotionally hardsore... for example I think of the girl from the movie 16 candles that is dress all in black and "freaky"

An emo is someone who has an emotional disorder and is out of control i.e they slit their wrists dont become one

Originally it was just short for "Emotional". I dread to think how it's been prostituted for use now elsewhere.
