and the cat smelled like perfume was sprayed directly on him!

My in-laws seem quite normal; they do like cats a lot, but isn't this a bit much?

I was nudging my husband to say something, but he didn't even know what to say.

Should we just let it got ... I mean, it's not like nail polish and perfume can harm a cat, right?

LOL.

If she went to this much trouble to paint a cats nails, I would say that it is safe to assume that she used the polish that is made specifically for PETS.

Some of that perfume that is made for pets actually comes in fragrances that is very close to designer ones for humans. I have an organic one (Banana Vanilla) that after I spray Sirius, I walk through the cloud. It smells very, very good!

Besides people spend over a BILLION a year on pet accessories. Some of those leashes and collars are decked out in crystals and can set you back $300 or more!

Wow, the in-laws must've been really bored! :) Your kitty will be fine. Just give him a bath to get rid of the perfume smell and the polish can be taken off. When I first got my kitten, he had to be with me all the time. This one day I was painting my nails this really deep red and he wanted to investigate, so he went up to the nail polish and with one swoop knocked the bottle of polish up and all over the floor and himself. There was nail polish all over his fur, in his eyes, everywhere. I freaked, picked him up and ran him underneath the bathroom faucet. I managed to get most of the polish off of him and he was fine. He still likes to come around me when I put fingernail polish on, but now I make sure to hold the bottle. :) Kitty will be fine. I also use lavendar oil on my cat after his bath, so perfume won't hurt him either.

I would let it go. Doesn't sound like they meant to harm your cat. Keep you keep your relationship good with your in laws. In the future politely ask them to not do it again when you go away or leave your cat elsewhere

As long as it doesn't show any allergic signs. You know they were attentive pet watchers! and it is definetely something for you and your husband to laugh about in the future. Just let it go otherwise.
