Taken as directed, birth control pills are very effective. The really good thing about them is that there are many options available so if you have unwanted side effects with one, your doctor can switch you another one which may be a better fit for your body. It certainly requires the commitment from you to remember to take the pills every day @ around the same time. Many women set their cell phones so that they're reminded each day to take it. It's something to consider and certainly worth it to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. The Nuvaring is also a good option and seems to have fewer side effects than the pill even though there's hormone present. You didn't mention whether or not you've ever given birth. If you have not, then you are not a candidate for an IUD. Very few doctors will insert one if you've not had kids because it's much more difficult and uncomfortable. If you have had a baby, then an iud is a good option. Depo Preovera shots are very effective and you only have to think about birth control every three months. Many women love this method of pregnancy prevention while others find the side effects to be too uncomfortable. Diaphragms are also a possibility- -no hormones so no hormonal side effects. Most people find them messy and feel that they interfere with spontaneity since they need to be inserted no more than 2-3 hours prior to sexual intercourse. When you schedule your appointment with your doctor or a nurse practitioner, make sure you tell the scheduler it's for a "contraceptive consult". That way you'll have enough time to discuss all your options and hopefully choose what's best for you. Take care.

I have used the pill, IUDs and condoms.... got pregnant with all three even though I was using them properly and carefully. I swear I am the single most fertile human being on the planet!

Now I have my tubes tied and I've finally been able to stop worrying constantly.

the shot has horrible side effects. if you're not good at remembering, i'd say look into Nuvaring or an IUD. go to plannedparenthood.org for information on these and other methods. good luck
