I happen to like technological things myself, but I must admit that its just that male and female brains are wired a little bit differently.
found a site that explains it better than I could.

I don't think it's that male oriented.
I found citations for 32 women in computer science, including Grace Hopper who helped coin the phrase "a bug."
It could be because IT people are often stuffed shirts and girls tend to like to get out and do more stuff then just sit at a keyboard day and night. Most IT people go home and sit at their comptuters!
Thus Girls like to be lawyers, because you get to do lunch, go out and go to court, take field trips and make more money than and IT person!
They also get to beat up on Male lawyers in the court room!
Now if you want a profession that virtually TOTALLY absent of women there is Sanitary Engineer (the Garbage Man). I don't recall every seeing a girl do that job (and it pays pretty good, usually about $30K a year).

Because when most of were kids we were taught what kind of jobs are acceptable for him and her. Its not to say that you can't enter that profession cause theres nothing they can do if suddenly majority of females decide to enter. But we'll all socialized in such a way that boys=doctors and girls=nurses and so forth.

I had a whole career in IT and I wouldn't say it's male orientated. Maybe your IT teacher has passed a bias on to you. Women are excellent in IT and it makes a fine career from which you will be able to retire very early. Go for it.
