I had a long drive Sunday as me & my partner went for a day out in London, however I am 28 & a half weeks pregnant. For the past week I have been getting horrible period type cramps at the bottom of my belly & on Sunday whilst driving home I was getting sharp shooting pains in my right ovary (or in that area) and tightening cramps in my belly which were also going right round to my lower back as well. They lasted for around 2 and a half hours & were about 6 minutes apart (or there abouts). I have had them on & off every since but the period type cramp & back pain is something I am struggling with everyday? Are these just Braxton Hicks or maybe a sign things may set off a little early? I don't know if this makes a difference but I have also had a bad belly (diareahea) for a few days. Please help a first time mum which doesn't really know whats going on, I have an appointment with my midwife tomorrow @ 3pm but just thoughts I'd ask your oppinions before i see her. Thank you Gemma.

Hi guys,

Thanks for answers so far, I have had no bleeding but still having the cramps daily & also the twinges in my lower back & sides. Last night trying to sleep was a nightmare, waking up every hour or so, tossing & turning with cramps.

If there has been no bleeding, I would not worry too much, but they do sound a lot like branston hicks. However, you are a little bit early to be experiencing these, so definatley mention it to our midwife. It may just be a tummy upset. Good luck.

I am almost 38 weeks and I have had those braxton hickes sence I was 25 weeks. From what you are saying I am almost sure that these are braxton hicks. I actually had them a few nights ago they lasted 2 hours and were 4 minutes apart. I went to the doctors yesterday and they checked me and I haven't started to dialate yet. So try not to worry. Some people are very different and will have some uncomfortable braxton hicks throughout there pregnancy. I also have period like cramp off and on and I find this happens when I have been up doing things such as house work. So hang in there you'll get more answers today when you have your appointment.

It's Braxton Hicks most likely. "Real" contractions don't go away, they only intensify and come closer and closer together. Also, with real contractions you will feel them throughout your entire uterus, not just sections of your uterus. I'm 38 wks and my Dr. told me to go to the hospital when my contractions are 5 minutes apart and are intense enough to take my breath away.

Braxton Hicks contractions will go away if you walk (or if you're walking, sitting down can help). You should also drink some water as they can be brought on be dehydration. I'm sure your midwife will explain further. Good luck and don't stress over this!

Oh, and you're NOT too early for Braxton Hicks, they actually start around 6 - 8 wks, but most women don't feel them until the 3rd trimester.

My personal thoughts...I think you probably got dehydrated and that definitly sounds like BH's. Except the part of the shooting pains in the ovary and the fact you were having them every 6 mins. My midwife told me if I have more than 5 an hour, I'm to go in because it can be a concern for pre-term labor. If drinking and laying down doesn't help within 2 hours, go to the doc's or hospital.

At 28 weeks it's important to talk to your doctor/midwife if you feel ilke you're having contractions. Yes, it may be the stomach problems are setting off the pain, but just in case you should call the doctor (if you still feel them today, you should call the doc today not wait till tomorrow). If it is some type of early labor there are things they can have you do or take to stop it, it's important for your baby to stay inside you as long as possible!

I would call your doctor just to be sure- however around 28-30 weeks you will start feeling cramping like feelings as your pelvic cavity will start spreading and it sometimes hurts- Another thing to be concerned with is a uti or urinary tract infection. This can also mimic labor pains as they can be sharp stabs that come and go. Diarrhea is also somethign that mimics labor - in fact when you are about 38-40 weeks diarrhea can trigger labor as your body may believe that you are in labor. In order for that to happen you have to be very ready to deliver - thus the 38-40 weeks. So dont panic with every bit of diarrhea.

you really should call your doctor either way.

Braxton Hicks Contraction feel like a tightening of the abdominal wall, and may or may no be painful. They usually are not regular, so I would talk about this with your midwife. She may want to assess you to see if your baby has dropped or if your cervix is beginning to efface.

To me it sounds like contractions. I had these very early in my pregnancy and when i went to the doctor they hooked me up to monitors and found out they were real contractions and so they had to stop them by giving me medication and i was on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy and i dilated to 2 cm while having those contractions. Good Luck.

you are way too early for B/H contractions...hopefully it is just the loose bowels and gas trouble....have you had any spotting?
good luck
