It is perfectly normal to experience these feelings -- whether towards a male or female. It sounds like you respect, admire, and even envy this individual for his attributes and personality.
If you are worried about the gay aspect of this behavior, then you must ask YOURSELF are the feelings you have for this individual more than a non-romantic interest. If you do realize you are attracted to this individual, then don't freak out. It is okay to be gay. Start to learn more about yourself and strengthen your own ideas and it will make coping with this transition in your life an easier one.

You say that you admire him a great deal so he might be the type of person you wish you had been at 14. If you have desires for him physically to show him your love, then you might be gay. That is normal too. The problem is his age. You are too old for him to be in a love or sexual relationship and might need to get him off your mind with new interests.
You can examine your feelings for yourself but do the right thing. If you admire him then maybe a friendship is possible but there is still an age difference here because developing teens are not on your emotional level. Many boys of 17 are in love with 14 year old girls though. 3 or 4 years apart is a normal range for love matches.
You compared your feelings to that of loving a girl. You might ask your parent, or someone who is patient and understanding, what they think right now while you are questioning this. Parents are smarter these days and some will know what you are talking about if you will explain it completely. Don't wait. Face this and find other opinions. Yes, it's normal. That deep of a love can be awesome, but frightening too. If you are wondering what to do with it, just let it be. If you are thinking of making it sexual, which is what it sounds like you are hinting at, that one is tougher to answer. I don't think it has to be sexual. I love several men very deeply, but I'm very hetero. It's okay. You can love another man, it doesn't mean you're necessarily gay, if that's your concern. If that is your concern then you should talk to someone you trust that won't use this to try and harm you. Talk with a counselor.
Do you know how your friend feels? Is that the biggest fear - his reaction? ... tough, very tough. I guess I would also caution losing a deep friendship over going somewhere he may not be ready to go. Go carefully and make sure you sort your feelings out first and then check his before blurting out any revelations. It is perfectly normal, whether you are gay or straight. You probably feel a strong connection to him possibly because he is alot of the things you want to be yourself, or he might remind you of a close male figure in your life that you admire or used to admire. I wouldn't worry about it, if you feel sexually attracted to him then you are probably gay which is perfectly fine but I am pretty sure you just see in him what you want from yourself. Remember it is human nature to emulate people and things that we like or wish to be.

Its Ok to admire someone of any sex for their accomplishments, but it is not normal to feel loveing feelings towards them. If that is what your experiencing, see your doctor and get a referral to a psycologist so you can sort this all out.
