Ireland has had centuries to develop accents for nearly every region/town. The most distinct are the Dublin, Cork and Belfast accents. Even then those cities have at least two different accents. Class is not much of a factor as in Ireland propsperity is very fluid.
Our accents also tend to become stronger when we are not at home, especially in America where it is such a novelty it almost proves benefical socially to tone up the brogue.

It's is more to do with regionalism and class. My husband is from England and he has a very standard Cambridge accent, his sister lived in a certain area of London so her's is different from my husband's, her husband's is different than both of theirs. It can vary from street corner to street corner. Fascinating though.

Mountains, religion, and politics have divided people.
Mainly moutnains, I would bet.
Same thing in China.
