I am mixed and I am SOOOO tired of people asking me 'What nationality are you?' which is even worse than asking what race I am. If I feel ready to tell people, I will. I think it's a very personal question that ultimately relates to my background and it leads to a lot of questions about how my parents met. I would never ask someone about their family history or background and I just don't see that it's any different.
I know I should take it as a compliment that people are just curious or think I am interesting looking BUT it's a constant reminder that people pay so much attention to how you look. It really puts me off when I put so much effort into all the other areas of my personality and my life. You're right, WHO your daughter is matters, not WHAT she is...

I know it is rude because I have personal experience....I look Puerto Rican (well just Latina in general) but I'm black and people ask me all the time what I am and its so ANNOYING.
But people are curious and they'll ask even if it is rude. Labeling should stay on soup cans - maybe one day people will realize that we're all humans and we need to stop separating ourselves...grr.

no it's not. Just tell your daughter to say she is half black half white.
I mix up oriental people all the time, and they take it personally. HECK I mix my own race up with pakis and sri lankans and they take it personally. So I think asking is not rude at all.
It's if they call your daughter a mullato.. she shoudl be pissed off about that.

No, I don't think its rude. People are just curious. From past I have noticed that children who are mixed with white & black are very beautiful kids. They have beautiful features. People may just be asking out of curiousity. I wouldnt let it get to you.

Most of the time when I ask that question it is because of curiosity, not a racial thing at all. Especially if I see a photo and because of gorgeous skin and certain hair color, I get curious just to know what the heritage is behind that look.

In some ways yes. It's kinda rude but if you know the person asking about it much, it's okay. And maybe they're just curious or something or they find it interesting to talk about and stuff. :)

In some countries and cultures to have someone who doesn't know yow ask you ANY question - to me is a good thing in a world where people don't look sideways for fear of repercussion.
Take it as a compliment unless otherwise proven.

I don't think it's rude. People will always be curious, try not to put everyone who asks "in a box." It's human nature, and not ALL mean to offend.

It usually sounds that way, yeah...some people are probably just curious, that's the way we are. We don't need to put people in groups, I've always fought against labels that people place on me....even when they're right ;)
