Horn & Hardart's Automat - opened in 1912. It's certainly not McDonald's - White Castle was around before McD's; the first McDonald's opened in 1955 (in Illinois). White Castle opened in 1929.

The first fast food restaurant was the Automat in Philadelphia in 1910, followed by another branch in Manhattan in 1912 (and in the 20s and 30s there were Automats all over). Next was White Castle, which started in Wichita, KS in 1921, selling hamburgers for a nickel. White Castles are still to be found in the NE USA.

The first A&W opened in 1922 in Lodi, California, serving soft drinks only. They didn't start serving food until 1978.

The first Dairy Queen branch opened in 1940, though they didn't start selling food (other than ice cream) until the 1970s.
The first KFC outlet opened in Salt Lake City in 1952.
The first Sonic drive-in opened in Oklahoma in 1953.
The first Burger King branch opened in Miami in 1954.
The first Burger Chef opened in 1954 in Indiana.
The first Sandy's Hamburgers opened in 1956 in Illinois.
The first Ginos Hamburgers opened in 1959 in Baltimore.
The first Carrols Burgers opened in 1960 in upstate New York.
The first Taco Bell opened in Downey, CA in 1962.
The first Griff's opened in 1962 in Kansas City, MO.
The first Red Barn opened in 1963 in Dayton, Ohio.
The first Arby's branch opened in Ohio in 1964.
The first Subway opened in 1965 in Connecticut.

Dick McDonald opened the first McDonalds in 1940 as a barbecue drive-through in California. It closed 3 months later when McDonald realized that the walk-in hamburger place down the road was getting all the customers, and re-opened in 1948 as a walk-up stand serving burgers, fries, shakes and Coca-Cola. McDonald did not expand nor did he change to the current concept of a walk-in eatery. That was Ray Kroc, who came up with the idea of fast food franchises in 1955. The first McDonalds hamburger restaurant - as we know it now with indoor seating and "golden arches" - opened in 1961.

The first to go national was McDonald's. There has been local 'fast food' forever.
