Your handbrake has a racheting system that allows for simple pulling up, and will keep it from just falling back down. The sound it makes when you pull it up, that is the racheting system catching as it is raised. The system is designed to only need to push the button in when you want to let it down, as it disengages the rachet system. Think of it like a ratched used to put on and take off bolts, it goes freely in the direction you want it to, and then catches and turns the bolt in the direction you need it to.
Simply put, your handbrake is designed to only need the button pressed to disengage the ratchting system so that you can disengage the handbrake. Being backed out of the driveway with it on is not a big deal, I actually think that is a law of nature that all people must back out of a driveway with the handbrake on atleast once int heir lives. I hope this give you a better understanding of how your handbrake system works. Good Luck
Ok, quick amendment to my answer, let the expirence talk, Dodge Man is a cerified mechanic, and he knows what he is talking about, so take his word over mine, I'm sure he knows alot more than I do on this subject.

Don't blame the poor husband!
You only need to press the button to release it. The fact yours needed adjustment is because you have been using it, and the cables and shoes have "worn in". It may not need further adjustment for quite a while. All is normal.

Usually it is a ratchet devise that works in one direction, meaning that when you apply it - it usually stays on by itself, and you need to push the button to dis-engage it.
Needing an adjustment is a little odd, but backing out with your brake on causes the self adjusting brake mechanism to operate so your rear brakes could simply be wearing pre-maturely due to that action.

i own a repair shop ,and its not necessary that you have to do this ,but it does save wear and tear on the teeth on the gear, and it will last longer, but i have known people that never mashed the button in,and never had any problems from it,so if you forget to mash the button once in a while, your not going to hurt it.but it is a good idea to do this ,good luck i hope this helps.

Push the button down when you pull it up as well. you will break the ratchets on it, so when you park on a hill it wont work properly
