Do what "Sensible_" says to do. Do NOT use a regular snake. The regular snake does not properly bend in the toilet and can easily scratch the procelin toilet bowl. Eventually you will see dark stain marks where it scratched the bowl.

Use a closet auger which is specifically made for toilet clogs. They cost about $15-20 at Home Depot.

When using the closet auger, don't just push on the cable. Rather turn the crank and SLOWLY push on the cable. This will cause the cable to "drill" through the obstruction rather than trying to "hammer" its way through.

Two additional words of advice. Toilet bowls are designed NOT to overflow PROVIDED you flush only ONCE. They overflow when people panic and flush again. If your toilet does clog up, do not flush again UNTIL the water drops to it's normal level.

Secondly (as you now see it's obvious) don't put anything down the toilet that does immediately break up. Toilet paper breaks up almost immediately after it hits the water. But facial tissue (aka "Kleenex), cotton balls, paper towels, sanitary napkins, disposable diapers do NOT break up and will clog the toilet.

Not sure what type auger you bought. If it is one of those with a 3/8" cable that comes coiled up in a container with a crank, it probably won't get the clog out. What you need is a closet auger. They are about 4' long with a 1" cable and plastic cover that is curved on the opposite end from the crank handle. The q-tips are probably lodged in the toilet trap and paper is collecting around them. When you use a cable snake, it goes through the paper and then reseals quickly. Closet auger should dislodge the q-tips.

You need to run the auger(snake) again until it is thourghly cleaned out. You can do it and save you a ton of cash, I have faith in you, run the auger until the line is clear, you may have to go downstairs and run the auger to push it on down the line. Start at the top and work your way down.Tell your daughter not to put those things in the toilet.

Keep using the auger, and go beyond where you think the clog is.
