I think a combination of things others mentioned would work best. Photo(s), Book mark, and mabye a calling card as well.
I know it will be a little difficult for you this year, so here's a hug from a distance!

Create a bookmark with a photo or two scanned in, and a nice poem about mothers. Other flat things I have mailed, are magnets, gum, a story or poem printed off on decorative paper, a matted (but not framed) photo, small booklet, handkerchief with decorative borders, flower petals (silk or real), music for piano, a music or movie cd, calling and gift cards. You can purchase gift cards for many different businesses, and also you could buy her an online gift certificate, such as to Amazon.com if she is willing and able to buy things online.
If you have movie maker on your computer, or a similar program, you could put some photos of your family together set to a song that is appropriate for Mother's day or one of her favorite songs. You could mail this in a flat cd mailer, the size of a letter or greeting card, but made from cardboard.

Choose the best picture of her, you, or the 2 of you together. Carve out 4 small triangles on your card, & insert the picture into it, with a loving message from your heart.
