As others have pointed out, due to legislation, London chipperies are no longer allowed to serve fish and chips in yesterdays daily mail - a situation that, while probably good for our health, isn't nearly as enjoyable.

You can, however, still get fish and chips in newsprint (newsprint is a paper similar to that used by the newspapers, but without any ink on it - effectively unused newspaper). You'll find that mostly in the inner suburbs and smaller country towns. My favourite is Albert's Plaice (despite the horrible pun) on Brixton Hill in SW2. They also make fantastic chips.

(as an aside, there is one chippy that I know of - Harbord Fish and Chips - that still uses actual newspapers. But that's in Toronto, Canada, so probably not worth the trip just for the experience. However if you are in Toronto (really fun town, by the way) be sure to pop by. It's a little roadside shack on Harbord St, just west of the University of Toronto.)

Before it was banned by Hygiene laws the ink on the newspaper contaminated the food (remember the ink on your fingertips when reading the paper?)
Now days the ink has been replaced with a more 'cleaner' ink that doesn't rub off and has been proven to be safe with chips but unfortunately the law is the law and wont be changed.

Seriously doubt it..apparently we were all being poisoned all those years ago when we ate fish n chips out of newspaper...so it's banned under health and safety regs...

How on earth did we survive all the things that nowadays are deemed unsafe!

Newspaper is no longer allowed to be used for fish and chips. ( Health and Hygiene) It is generally put into grease proof bags saturated with salt and vinegar, and then wrapped in un-bleached recycled paper of the same type used in the newspaper industry. De-licious. All take-away chip shops serve it this way. Please don`t throw the paper in the street afterwards. Please keep Britain Tidy.

'Fraid not. Not in London or anywhere else. Hygiene laws have outlawed the practice. Usually a styrofoam tray and/or white paper now.
