I did it with on leafgreen, and the way I did it was...

Trial and error

I'd memorize which path I took to get to the cave I'm in, then start randomly walking into caves. If I got the wrong one, I went back, and tried another cave. Simple. I have no idea what the guy meant about the number of boulders. I didn't really notice them.

Here's the solution. Imagine each room as a square clock but without the numbers around the outside (i.e. 3,6,9,12 around the outside). Each room will have either 3,6,9 or 12 rocks in it. Count the rocks and now imagine the numbers around a clock. You should be able to figure it out from there. But even so, I'l clarify for you...

If there are 3 rocks, go through the right door
If there are 6 rocks, go through the bottom door
If there are 9 rocks, go through the left door
If there are 12 rocks, go through the top door

This is a long pattern. Get a note pad, and record your steps. I had them, but threw it out. It's pretty rewarding. At the end you meet this stuck up woman who you rescue, and then whenever you go to her cottage she'll ask to see a certain Pokemon. If you have it, bring it to her, and you get a rare item.
