My baby is going for her first shots today. I was given baby tylenol to give to her before she went. My question is, how much time beforehand should I give her the tylenol for it to be effective?

45-60 minutes beforehand is probably good. You could even wait till after the shot to give it to her, since it will mostly treat any fever or side effects she gets after the shot. Most of the crying will probably come from the immediate shock of being stuck...she'll probably cry like hell for a few minutes afterwards and then be okay. I would always nurse my son in the room after he got his shots until he calmed down...so if you are nursing, you may want to try that, or a bottle or pacifier, since when they are that young they derive so much comfort from sucking. Then you don't have to attempt to leave the doctors office and be checking out with a screaming baby. I did that the first time and was so stressed, I was sweating like a madman. Good luck!!!!

45 minutes or so...your not a bad mom for giving your daughter Tylenol..people suck...I agree that it is best not to give children medicine needlessly .....but come on...I would rather give my child Tylenol 3 or 4 times a year when he gets shots and know that he will be able to rest painlessly on the car ride home from the doctors.

I agree, don't give tylenol.

Not only will it mask reactions, it inhibits the bodies ability to filter out the toxins from the vaccines (and she'll be getting about 7 vaccines today, typically split into 3 shots). Some of those toxins include aluminum, formeldahyde and hydrochloric acid.

Shots are something that every parent should research before doing. You need to weigh out the risks and benefits for yourself and your particular child.

Here is another reaction that has been posted here:

i would give it to her about an hour before you take her to get the shots. i have three children and have always been told to give the tylenol before shots are given. the other people telling you not to give it are crazy. most shots will cause fussiness, fever, soreness and possibly diarrhea.

It depends on the baby. I never gave my son any medicine before going to get shots. He was fine, no fever and very little crying. No one ever told me to give him anything before the shot but do give him after if needed.

Don't give Tylenol.
It will mask any reactions that she may have that I assume you'd want to know about.

I applaud parents making decisions that they have researched to the grindstone, I suggest you have a look at some of these links beofre you inject your baby.

You can always vaccinate later, should you even decide too, BUT you CAN'T take them back.

Do you want to possible deal with a reaction like this?...

I just did this on the 28th of February. I did give my daughter just half a dropper (I didn't know how much to give) and I told the doctor and she said it isn't necessary to do, it is better to get it after the shot if needed. My daughter weighted 12 lbs and I was able to give her one whole dropper but she didn't need it........... SO please just wait till you go to the doctors.
