Zurkhaneh or Zourkhaneh

Zurkhaneh or Zourkhaneh (Persian: زورخانه ; literally house of strength) is the Iranian traditional powerhouse (gymnaism), in which the national and traditional Iranian sport, Varzesh-e Pahlavani (Sport of the Warriors) or Varzesh-e Bāstāni (Sport of the Ancients) is practiced.

Zourkhaneh is not only a place for physical exercises but also a place for learning chivalrous behaviors. The Zourkhaneh-participants are first expected to be pure, truthful, and good tempered and then strong in body. The Zourkhaneh and Varzesh-e Pahlavani have their roots in Iranian culture, date back to at least two thousand years ago.

Pahlavan Pourya-ye Vali and Pahlavan Takhti were among the modern famous Zourkhaneh athletes.

It is a strength sport, based mainly on sheer power.
