For anyone who thinks PublishAmerica is a "real" publisher, please see the link below, the Rip Off Report.

Anyway, moving right along...

First, identify your market. What type of a book did you write? Is it more suited for a small press, or do you think you need a major publisher? This will determine how you move forward.

Major publishing houses will only consider agented submissions. An agent is a literary professional that knows the inner workings of the industry, and can best help you place your book. Agents never get paid unless they actually place your book. An agent that requests money or tries to sell you expensive add-on services is a scam.

Most small presses do not require an agent. They will accept unagented works. But first, you must send a query letter and request their submission guidelines. Each publisher has their own standards as to how a book should be submitted. Some want a dead tree copy double spaced. Some want it of CD or floppy disk. Some are now asking folks to upload to ftp sites. You need to understand the guidelines AND FOLLOW THEM! Nothing will kill your chances with a publisher faster than ignoring their guidelines.

Self-publishing is not a good option UNLESS you already have a firm understanding of the industry, money to spend, and don't really care if you sell a lot of copies. With any self-publishing company (even Lulu.com, which allows you to publish your book without upfront costs) there is a price to publishing. You will need to advertise, mail out comp copies, arrange for distribution, handle sales and returns, etc. etc. Not to mention you will probably need to hire a proofreader and editor (I don't care who tells you otherwise, no author is so talented that they can edit their own work...). You'll need someone to help you with layout and cover art design. In short, you stop being a writer and BECOME a publisher.

The very best thing you can do is to go to your favorite bookstore and purchase a Writer's Market (or subscribe to the online version). It's a database of "Where to sell what you write."

It's also advisable to try to find a literary agent. For a percentage of the revenues that your books make, your agent will try to sell your manuscript to publishers. Agented authors are nearly three times as likely to sell a manuscript than unagented authors. In fact, some publishers won't even consider your work unless its presented by an agent.

Good luck!

Don't give your book directly to a publisher. Find an agent. Otherwise, you'll never get it published. If your looking to get a book published, just for yourself, there are many small printing co.s that can help with that.

Get the book "Proof-read" then edited and then find an agent!
Then you can establish which market you aim for!
Good Luck!
