the former is much worse i think. when you make something public is much worse. kping opinion about someone evn within a group of people it's one's choice although a very low act coming from someone deemed decent and respectfull. So gvng urself respect and respect other's differences is what everyone should be doing: minding their own business. now in terms of politics this is different.

Gossiping is cheeky... does not give a chance to the object person to respond or defend. Insulting in public at least needs some courage of conviction.

The difference is you and I are standing in public and I call you and insulting name. Everyone within ear shot of us can witness to that fact that indeed I did call you names. I am at least saying how/what I feel to your face.

Gossiping is a hidden venue. Two or three people get a good rumor started and it silently slips around from on mouth to another until finally you hear the insult.(however twisted it has become when you finally hear).

When you insult some one in public, you are not bothered about that person's feeling, that is you are not empathetic. In this process that person may be hurt depending on the relation yuu hold with him. In this process you are direct and not back biting him, your feelings towards him/her is straight forward.

When you gossip about someone, you are spreading rumors about the person without any sound proof. This shows that you are not having a good relationship with that person. you have some kind of jealousy towards him/her. Also it shows that your mental health is not that good. You don't have the guts to talk to him directly and sort out the issue.

the motivation is different...if one gossips then the motivation is to be the center of attention while insulting someone to gain the sought after approval from others to support your actions but if one insults someone directly the motivation is about control and to place yourself in a one up position over the other person in an effort to gain self esteem at the expense of another person

An insult is given face to face, gossip is spoken behind the subject's back, when they are not able to respond.
