Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtue by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools and by allegories, lectures and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality, mutual aid, secrecy, and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the Fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the craft.
Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodge's next stated meeting when the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee who will interview the petitioner in person. The investigating committee will report back to the Lodge at the following stated meeting when those members present will vote on the petitioner. Once accepted the petitioner will be given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. There are certain requirements which a candidate must meet before proceeding from one degree to the next.
One must obtain the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before he can wear any Masonic jewelry. One must have a Belief in a Supreme Being and HOLY BOOKS play an important part of all Masonic Rituals, Ceremonies ans activities. The tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. " The Masonic Fraternity is NOT a Secret Society but rather a Society With Secrets just like many other Fraternal Organizations such as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Moose, Elk, Eagles, Knights of Pythias, Knights of St. John, Knights of Columbus, Lions, etc. etc. No matter what you have heard the Masonic Fraternity is NOT Satanic nor is it a Religion.
Suggest if you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity are a male over 18 years of age you contact a man whom you know to be a Mason for further information and an application. If under 18 years of age you can inquire about the DeMolay Organization.
If no local Masonic Lodge is available then suggest you contact the Grand Lodge of Masons for the State in which you reside.
If you are a Lady the Masonic Fraternity offers the Order of Eastern Star for those over 18 years of age and for those under 18 the Masonic Fraternity offers the Order of Rainbow Girls or Job's Daughters. For requirements for joining these Ladies Organizations please contact the local Masonic Lodge or the Grand Lodge Office for the State in which you reside as requirements MAY vary from State to State.
Please contact a Mason or go to a local Masonic Lodge for further information as there are many who claim to know and have information about the Masonic Fraternity much of which may be erroneous unless one is a member and " in the know " who can tell you the truth about the Masonic Fraternity.
I have read some answers here and there is some information which is incorrect.

The Freemasons were actually established in the late 1700's as a gentleman's club, though they "claim" their roots go back as far as the masons who built Solomon's Temple, and the mason's guilds of the middle ages. Anyone could just walk up and claim they were a skilled mason during the middle ages, so the masonic guilds adopted certain handshakes which true masons could identify each other by--the Freemasons adopted this. Many of the claims are just traditions, and most Masons know this--it's just for show. The real purpose of the Masons is public service, and a code of honor. Their symbol, the square and level with the G in the center, has a purpose. It is to remind them to deal "squarely" with others, and to be "on the level" (both terms originated with the Masons), with either "God" or "Goodness" (the meaning of the "G" is viewed differently by different Masons) at the center of their lives. Potential new members are interviewed, and given a mentor to help them understand the code of ethics and the meaning of Masonic rituals. They are not a "secret society," as many claim, they are a society which does have secrets, which automatically makes others distrust them. As I once heard a Mason exclaim, "For goodness sake, we even have bumper stickers!"

An organization of men, who meet monthly, usually have dinner, and go home. The rumors of any of the ritual work that they do, being entirely secret, are false. A mason is sworn not to reveal what goes on in his lodge, but there are many books, that describe pretty accurately what happens. The Freemasons are dedicated to quietly performing good works or deeds in the community.

They are an organization that fits every dictionary definition of a separate religion. They have their own god (Great Architect of the Universe), they have their own heaven (Celestial Lodge Above), and their own plan of salvation (first of all, coming in out of the "darkness" and then doing good works to get them into "heaven"). To be a Mason, you also must agree that EVERY religion is correct. Which is obviously, anti Christian. Because to agree that Hinduism will get you to the same Grand Celestial Lodge Above as Buddhism, or Judiasm, or Athiesm (Albert Pike) or Christianity, then you are completely denying the fundamental beliefs that there is only one Christian God. Jesus said, "Noone comes to the Father except through me." Not through good works. Not through Hindu gods. Not through the Grand Worshipful Master. Through Him. Masonry denies Jesus existed and bans the use of His name in Lodge activities, prayers, etc. Yet the higher you get in Masonic Degrees, the more that is revealed to you about "the real god", including his "real name."
Don't be fooled. All members will tell you they aren't a religion. But if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, poops like a duck....even if it says "mooooo", it is still a duck.
I've done the research. I've seen some rituals. I've read through the paperwork, and other secret correspondence. My Step-Dad was 32nd Degree and a Shriner, his dad was likewise 32nd Degree. Been there, done that.

The Masons are a semi-secret Christian Mens organization. One of their faults may be in what some would call anti-catholic beliefs. However the Masons have and are generally considered upstanding and virtuous men. Historically, had it not been for the Masons, George Washington's Continental Army would have most likely disintegrated. Ched Wikepedia for more information, Time Magazine also had a cover/feature article recently on the Masons.
