Where's the closest beach that's good for swimming and playing in (you know, sand castles, all that traditional beach stuff that kids love)?

Beaches in the city are cold! Take a day and drive to Santa Cruz. It's about an hour southwest, but worth the trip. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will thrill the kids and the weather there is much nicer.

Take 280 south out of the city. You'll actually get to San Jose, then take 17 south over the Santa Cruz Mountains. Stay on 17 until it ends, then follow the signs to the Boardwalk.

Have fun!

I agree with the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. It's a beach with sand and you can play in the water, etc., but it's also got a great old fashioned amusement park too. Great for the kids.

If you want to skip the amusement park, any of the beaches directly north or south will do fine.

Honestly I'd have to say Santa Cruz. The closer ones are usually way to cold for swimming and sand castle building. Also Santa Cruz has the boardwalk (old fashioned amusement park, sorta like coney island). It's about an hour and a half drive away.

I think you should try Half Moon Bay beaches. It is very close to SF and lots of families there on weekends.

Also try the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach. Kids go crazy at the tidepools looking at hermit crabs and starfish. Lots of Pelicans and seals too.

There are a lot of beaches in Half Moon Bay and the surrounding areas. You might also want to check Capitola and Carmel.
