heart burn is stomach acid coming up into the part of your esophagus that is covered in stomach lining. usually if you have chronic heartburn that is not relieved with normal over the counter meds like pepto then you should go see a doctor. a heart attack on the other hand can seem very similar to heart burn but there are some key clues to let you know the difference. the pain may shoot down your left arm and neck. you may also feel a numbness here also. the is called angina pectoris. literally chest pain. this usually occurs when part of the heart isnt getting enough oxygen and can eventually die. doctors prescribe a medicince called nitroglycerine for this. if you feel that you are having pain that feels like an elephant on your chest or any pain or numbness that is radiating or shooting to other places of your body please call 911 on dont assume it is heart burn. i hope this helps.

No, heartburn is actually "acid reflux" which is more a condition of the stomach than the heart. It's called "heartburn" because the acid reflux is often accompanied by what feels like a burning sensation in the chest, but it's all in the stomach.

Neutralizing the acid is the way to cure "heartburn". You can do so with Tums, Rolaids, Pepcid, Zantac, Mylanta or any other acid neutralizer.

It is not in any way, shape or form related to a heart attack.

No BUT read on this.......
It’s not unusual for people to mistake symptoms of heart disease (such as angina and even a heart attack) for heartburn. Similarly, many people go to the emergency room each year out of fear that they’re having a heart attack, only to find out they have severe heartburn. The pain experienced during a heart attack and during a severe heartburn episode can be very difficult to distinguish. In fact, it often takes sophisticated medical testing to make the determination.

Possible Signs of Heartburn
* A sharp, burning sensation below the breastbone or ribs
* Burning sensation may move up toward the throat
* Pain usually doesn’t radiate to the shoulders, arms, or neck, although it can
* Pain often occurs after eating, particularly when lying down
* Pain that increases when bending over, lying down, exercising, or lifting heavy objects
* Bitter or sour taste at the back of the throat
* Symptoms tend to respond quickly to antacids

Possible Signs of Angina or Heart Attack
* A feeling of uncomfortable fullness, pressure, squeezing, tightness or pain in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back
* Pain or discomfort that spreads to one or both arms, the back, stomach, neck, or jaw
* Pain often responds quickly to nitroglycerin
* Shortness of breath
* Other symptoms such as:
o Breaking out in a cold sweat
o Nausea
o Lightheadedness
o Fainting
o Palpitations (feeling a rapid heart beat)

if you have any chest pain, or any warning signs of a heart attack, seek immediate medical attention. Do not try to decide for yourself.

Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. [1] The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is also identified as one of the causes of chronic cough, and may even mimic asthma.

Heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart; it is so called because of a burning sensation of the breastbone, although some heart problems have a similar sensation to heartburn.

The symptoms are very similar. Heart burn itself is a misnomer for indigestion which is usually associated with reflux.

No , they are not the same.
Heartburn is yet another name for indigestion and is short lasting and non life threatening.
A heart attack is deadly serious and is due to lack of OXYGEN to the heart muscle itself.
So they are totally different!

No. But due to the same vicinity, and lacking other symptoms (numbness, sweating, etc..) it can be at times difficult to discern the two.

I would imagine if upon taking an antacid the relief was immediate and complete - it's heartburn. But please confirm this wih your doctor.
