What about ancient volcanic rocks?

Not live ones, no. But there have been in the past. Edinburgh Castle (in Scotland) is built on top of an extinct volcano's plug - the cooled magma left after the rest of the volcano's cone has been eroded by weathering.

The British Isles are on a passive margin and there is no volcanic activity there. Given the history of the Earth, I would be very extremely surprised to find that there is no history of past volcanism in the British Isles. Since I haven't studied the geology of the British Isles, I am unqualified to answer that part of the question.
