Hi, hope this helps. I grew up on a sod farm and the 3 key ingredients is the subsoils and preparing them properly, water & fertilizer. If you can get black dirt (about a 1-2 inch lift spread throughout the yard & then hydoseed, this is your best bet. Otherwise, install an underground irrigation system with a fertilizing unit built in, then reseed and be generous with watering for at least the 1st 3-4 weeks. Good Luck and I hope this helps you out. Tony

Talk to your county extention agent to find out whats the best grass to grow in your area. Or you can call a lawn service, they usually will help you out over the phone hoping to get your business.
The choices of using sod or seed is up to you. Sod gives you a turf right away but can be labor intensive and costly.
Seed is easy for the do it your selfer as long as you don't have to loosen the top 2 inches of soil, but since you have sand tthat may not be a problem.
Either way you go you'll have to water, water, water and fertilize on a schedule recommended for the type turf you use.
look in some publications to assist you.

Right now is a great time to sow grass although it may not seem so.
You may want to try spreading 1-2 inches of topsoil on top of your yard this could help in the long run, but since sod was laid on the yard it should have a little bit of black dirt to grow on.
I'd recommend fertilizing your yard with some slow release fertilizer. Winter is a great time to plant grass seed because the freezing and thawing action of the ground helps work the seeds into the ground to grow. Jerry Baker who has written several books on gardening recommends to seed your yard even when there is snow on the ground. You may look crazy, but the freezing and thawing action works, because that is how many seeds in the wild get into the ground.
In the fall, about a week before Halloween is when you want to start putting weed killers on your lawn to kill the weeds out. The weed killer in the fall will weaken the weeds just before winter and the cold of winter will help kill them out of your yard. You have to weaken the weeds in the fall first though so that the winter cold can kill them off.
Also make sure your yard gets plenty of water. Between rain and watering it should get about 1 inch of water a week.
Also make sure to treat it for grubs/insects in the spring. Grubs will create brown spots on your yard where they eat it and I believe they come out of the ground and turn into Japanese Beetles come summer that eat up your garden and flowers.

Since you said it's mostly sand, it might not be a bad idea to have the area sodded. That way you have instant grass and also the top soil. The oly thing is , you really need to keep it watered daily, until the roots become established.
I know this method is more expensive than planting your own seed, but you would also have to improve you soil to get a good job.

grass seed is expensive but would do the job. if you rake it in properly and protect it against birds... sand.. I would add some good soil to help it along... you could always buy turf again... just normal grass will come back on its own eventually but then you will have to get the weeds out of your lawn for quite a while... and it will not give you a nice, neat lawn.. so seeds are my choice.

Break up the soil about six inches, cover with top soil, scatter grass seed, (mix Kentucky bluegrass & perennial rye grass seeds) water thoroughly, cover with straw or mulch.
Water about every 4 days till grass starts to grow, remove straw, then water once a week.

You need topsoil, mulch, fertilizers or manuer, and some grass seed. You can also get advice from your local nursery or garden center. And I am assuming you mean grass that grows on your lawn not the drug.

Get cuttings of couch from the neighbourhood. Cut into single pieces about 10 cm long. bury one end almost all the way but reasonably flat. Water on occassion. it will grow like crazy, but only in the warmer months.
